Adsorption and Elution Column

An adsorption column is a device that uses activated carbon as a medium to adsorb gold from heap leaching solutions of precious metals. Activated carbon is a porous material with special adsorption properties. Activated carbon can strongly adsorb gold mixed with chlorides or cyanides. The adsorption column is filled with granular activated carbon. When the purified solution flows through the activated carbon, the gold is adsorbed. The process of recovering gold from the solution using granular activated carbon includes the following steps: activated carbon adsorption, activated carbon elution or desorption, activated carbon regeneration, and recovery of gold from the desorbed solution by electrodeposition or displacement precipitation.

 

Working principle

While zinc displacement or ion exchange resin adsorption can be used to recover gold from heap leaching solutions of precious metals, activated carbon adsorption remains a simpler and more effective method for large-scale heap leaching operations. Activated carbon adsorption of gold from precious metal solutions typically employs multiple adsorption columns (or adsorption tanks) connected in series. Once a certain volume of precious metal solution has passed through, the first adsorption column becomes saturated. At this point, the second adsorption column is replaced with the first, and the original first adsorption column is replaced with a new one, and so on.
